The 2018 film 12 Strong produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Nicolai Fuglsig starring Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon was based on Doug Stanton's book Horse Soldiers, a true-life story of American soldiers in the early stages of the U.S. involvement in the war in Afghanistan who overcame great odds to achieve a stunning military victory.
In the days following 9/11, an elite U.S. Special Forces team was chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission.
