“I intend to make my own way in this world,” says Jo March in the latest film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel Little Women.
According to director Greta Gerwig, her motion picture provides the ending to the story that Alcott wanted, but couldn’t make acceptable to her publisher or her 19th century readers.
“This is not a story of ‘boy gets girl,’ but a story of ‘girl gets a book,’” Gerwig told OprahMag.com in an interview. "I wanted to give Louisa May Alcott an ending she might have liked."
Instead of Jo giving up her literary ambitions to devote herself to marriage with Professor Friedrich Bhaer, as she does in the novel, Gerwig’s film adaptation has her reject marriage to pursue her dream of becoming a successful author, just like Alcott.
