Democracy Day in Nigeria

This public holiday commemorates the restoration of democracy in Africa's most populous nation after the election of 1993 when a military junta annulled the election and detained the newly elected president.

In 1999, the military handed over power to an elected civilian government, ending decades of military rule in the nation.

Democracy Day has been a national bank holiday in Nigeria on June 12 since 2018.
