Croissant Day

This food holiday on 30 January recognizes the buttery pastry known as the croissant. The name comes from its crescent shape, known as croissante in French. Legend has it, the flaky bread roll originated in 1683 when Viennese bakers imitated the symbol of the Ottoman Empire during a siege of Vienna by the Turks. Marie Antoinette later introduced it to the French palate with the name "croissant."
