Observed January 29, this food holiday celebrates a snack food made by frying or baking cornmeal or masa into bite-sized pieces. Typically eaten alone, with a dip or topping like queso or salsa, corn chips or friotes are available in blue, white and yellow corn varieties as well as organic, salted, unsalted, and more.
Corn chips originated as cut-up, fried, or hardened tortillas. The idea of manufacturing a rectangular-shaped corn chip was trademarked in the United States by traveling salesman Isadore J. Filler as Corn Chips in 1932. Soon after, the trademark was purchased by an Elmer Doolin, who began manufacturing them in Texas under the name Frito Corn Chips. In 1945, Doolin met potato chip manufacturer, Herman Lay, who agreed to distribute Fritos nationwide and their combined success led to Frito-Lay, Inc.
