To date, Diana Gabaldon's historical romance series of eight time travel novels have been adapted for a Starz network series of five seasons. The book tells the story of an English combat nurse from 1945 who is magically swept back in time to 1743, two years before the decisive Battle of Culloden that concluded the Jacobite uprising.
The television series has shown unusual fidelity to Gabaldon’s novels, to the point where viewers who have read the novels are rarely surprised by the plot.
