Adapted from Robert Sherwood's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, the film version of Abe Lincoln in Illinois starring Raymond Massey and directed by John Cromwell was released in 1940. Both the play and the film portray Abraham Lincoln's life from his departure from his native Kentucky in the 1830s until his election as President in 1860 and are based principally on the 1926 biography "Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years" by Carl Sandburg.
