Sheet Mulching in Winter

Sheet mulching

Weed control continues in the winter months in most areas, as weeds still grow in the off-season and landscape plants will need room to grow come spring.

An alternative to physically pulling weeds in winter, which can be impossible in frozen soil, is to sheet mulch over the weeds and around garden plants with cardboard or thick layers of newspaper. In their book Growing Plants and Flowers, Allison and Sean McManus explain that by doing this “you will cover the weeds so no light can reach them and they will eventually die because they will not be able to photosynthesize. By using cardboard or newspaper, you block sunlight long enough for weeds to die.”
