Not For Springtime Only

Growing vegetables in a home garden is not limited to spring and summer. Some plants thrive in cooler weather and, depending on the local climate, year-round gardening is a possibility.

Homesteader Jessica Sowards, host of Roots and Refuge Farm on YouTube, has made it her mission to debunk the seasonal bias toward gardening. “If new gardeners were to plan their gardens based on what is available in local big-box stores, they might believe that spring is the only time of year to plant a garden. Gardening is heavily marketed to consumers during spring months. The fall rolls around, and it can be difficult to find a bag of potting soil for sale anywhere.”

In her book Growing Vegetables, part of The First-Time Gardener series of instructionals, she introduces readers to frost-hardy plants like beets, cauliflower, English peas, kohlrabi and spinach as well as season extension tools like cold frames, row covers, and greenhouses.
