The Sagebrush State

Nevada achieved statehood in 1864 after decades of conflict, chaos, resource exploitation, and vigilantism. Its name means snow-capped in Spanish and Sierra Nevada was its first title in petitions before Congress, delayed by the onset of the Civil War.

This book details the government structure and political dynamics of Nevada. Once dominated by mining interests and rural politicians, its demographics have shifted dramatically. "Las Vegas, once a small railroad stop between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, is now the state's commercial and population center. More than 75 percent of Nevada's population resides in Clark County."

Updated through 2017, the 5th edition of this text includes the full text of the state constition and amendments as well as an analysis of the shifting political landscape and the issues tipping that balance.

Required reading for graduation from Nevada's colleges and universities, this volume is an essential primer for anyone involved in or affected by the state's government or political parties.
