On January 6, 2021, following his defeat in the presidential election by some seven million votes, Donald Trump attempted a coup on the United States government with the aid of several thousand rioters who stormed the Capitol and fought with police for several hours before disbanding.
The insurrection was orchestrated by Trump and a ragtag group of discredited advisors and supported by many Republican members of Congress who spread the lie that the election had been stolen and that Trump was the rightful President.
Reverberating in the public consciousness for months, the event led to disgrace and/or imprisonment for many of the perpetrators and to the collapse of the Republican Party.
