Fertilize houseplants only during periods of active growth. Houseplants hardly ever die of starvation, but they can be sickened by too much fertilizer. If a little fertilizer is good, a lot is not better.
Inspect your houseplant. Is it maintaining a normal color? Is it producing flowers? If yes to either of these questions, then no fertilizer is needed.
Under normal circumstances, three to four feedings a year is plenty.
The best fertilizers for houseplants are organic and water soluble. Dilute the liquid or dissolve the powder with water and pour into the soil as you water. Read the label on the fertilizer; only use as directed and don't add any extra. Almost all the fertilizer will be absorbed into the soil and into the roots; virtually none is lost through drainage.
