Saragarhi Day

Punjab, a state in northern India, observes September 12 as Saragarhi Day to commemorate the historic battle of Saragarhi, which occurred on the date in 1897. Under the command of Havildar Ishar Singh, 21 jawans and one non-commissioned officer attained martyrdom after killing hundreds of tribesmen who had attacked the Saragarhi outpost. The British government conferred the 21 soldiers with the highest battle honour, “Indian Order of Merit grade II”.

Saragarhi Day is celebrated on September 12 every year in Gurdwara Saragarhi Sahib to commemorate the sacrifices of these men.

State-level functions are held during the holiday at the Saragarhi Memorial Gurdwara at Ferozepur Cantt in district Ferozepur to mark the occasion.
