Puerto Rico Constitution Day

Celebrated each year on July 25, Puerto Rico Constitution Day is a state holiday commemorating the day the island nation’s constitution was signed into law by Governor Luis Muñoz Marín in 1952. A colony of Spain in the beginning of the 16th century, it remained under Spanish rule until 1898, when the USA invaded Puerto Rico and ceded it from Spain with the Philippines and Guam. As a US Territory, Puerto Rico’s constitution was approved by Congress and statehood has been officially requested, but never voted on. The U.S, Congress can agree by a simple majority vote to admit Puerto Rico as a state at any time. Why has that taken so long?
