Planetary conjunctions occur when two or more planets appear to be close together in the sky when viewed from Earth. Most of these celestial events are visible to the unaided eye in a clear sky and some are quite common, but others are very rare and occur hundreds of years apart.
On January 27, 2024, Mars and Mercury will pass within 0°12' of each other, appearing almost as close together as Jupiter and Saturn were during the Great Conjunction in 2020. Both planets will be visible to the naked eye in the morning, just before sunrise. From the Northern Hemisphere, Mars and Mercury will be low above the southeastern horizon in the constellation Sagittarius. From the Southern Hemisphere, the planets will appear a little higher.
