La Diada de Menorca

17 January is the national day of Menorca, one of the Balearic Islands east of Spain in the Mediterranean.

Celebrations begin a week in advance, with reenactments and pageants portraying the 1287 conquest of the island by Alfonso III of Aragon from the Caliphate of Cordoba which marked the beginning of modern society on the island and its identity as a nation with its own culture.
