Our Lady of Meritxell Day is a feast day in the Roman Catholic Church and the National Day of Andorra. Lady of Meritxell is the patron saint of Andorra, a sovereign landlocked principality on the Iberian Peninsula bordered by France to the north and Spain to the south.
The legend of the Lady of Meritxell dates back to the late 12th century when villagers from Meritxell found a wild rose blooming in January along their route to Mass in Canillo, and at its base was found a statue of the Virgin and Child. After the statue was moved to two different churches for safekeeping and each time returned to the wild rose near Meritxell, the villagers rallied to build their own chapel near the site.
This holiday is often celebrated by making a pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Virgin of Meritxell. followed by Mass, a community dance and concert, and a procession of torches.
