Independence Day in North Macedonia commemorates the day in 1991 when the former Socialist Republic of Macedonia gained its independence from Yugoslavia, of which it was a federal state, and became a sovereign parliamentary democracy. Greece opposed the nation name of “Macedonia,” claiming it was a Greek title being used by a people and culture that was not Greek, hence the compromise name of “North Macedonia.”
This holiday, which is North Macedonia's National Day, is known in North Macedonia as 'Den na nezavisnosta' and celebrated with firework displays, marches by the honor guard, and flag raising ceremonies. The North Macedonia flag features a stylized yellow sun in the center of a red field symbolizing the “new sun of Liberty” mentioned in the country’s national anthem and coat of arms.
