In Brazil, Father’s Day (Dia dos Pais in Portuguese) is observed the second Sunday in August in honor of St. Joachim, the father of the Virgin Mary and patron saint of fathers and grandfathers. The day is celebrated with family activities and gifts for fathers.

Since the feast day of St. Joachim is observed in August the day after the Assumption of Mary, the second Sunday of the month was selected for Father's Day to be on or near that date.
