Fastelavn

This traditional Danish carnival day is celebrated on the last Sunday before Lent. Celebrants used to prepare themselves for Lenten fasting by eating as much as possible, playing games, dressing up and partying.

While the traditional fasting is rare, many Danes (especially children) still wear costumes and party at Fastelavn and play games like "beating of the barrel" or "knocking the cat out of the barrel" game.

Fastelavnsboller

Fastelavn buns are a popular seasonal treat. Made from pastry dough and decorated with icing, they can be found in virtually any bakery or konditori at this time of year.
