The Eastern European nation of the Czech Republic celebrates it independence on October 28, marking the creation of the Czechoslovakia republic in 1918 when it declared its independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Known as Czechoslovakia during Nazi and Soviet occupations, the country peacefully split into the independent countries of the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993.
Also known as Foundation of the Independent Czechoslovak State Day, the public holiday is celebrated with parades, public gatherings and the Czech president presenting awards to leaders of cultural and social life.
