Occurring just before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, Carnival is a Western Christian festival of feasts, foolishness and gaiety prior to an extended period of penitence. In most areas, Carnival is observed on Monday and Tuesday, Rose Monday and Shrove Tuesday respectively, a period known also as Fasching or the Feast of Fools.
