Tortilla Chip Day

This food holiday celebrates a crunchy snack created from leftover round tortillas cut into triangles.

Similar to totopos and tostadas in traditional Mexican cuisine, tortilla chips are usually made from yellow corn flour but can also be made with white and blue corn flour.

They originated in the 1940s with Rebecca Webb Carranza, who worked at a tortilla factory in Los Angeles. She started frying misshapen tortillas that were being rejected by automated machines. She not only reduced waste, but created inexpensive snacking chips that quickly gained popularity.

By the 1980s, tortilla chips had become a significant part of American snacking culture, especially with the rise of nachos and various dipping sauces

Their popularity has been growing worldwide ever since.
