Macaroni and Cheese Day

Celebrated on July 14, this food holiday honors the tradition of cheese and pasta casseroles dating back to at least the 14th century in Italy.

For many in North America, this dish is synonymous with the economical Kraft Mac and Cheese boxed meal kits introduced during the Great Depression. One box could feed a family of four for only 19 cents.

The Kraft Dinner, as the meal kits are known in Canada, is the best selling grocery store item in the country. Canadians consume more macaroni and cheese per capita than any other nationality.

A creamy blend of American and/or cheddar cheeses with elbow macaroni, macaroni and cheese can readily be made from scratch and personalized with extra ingredients like eggs or evaporated milk.
