The recipes and "sensible advice" in this collection are contributed by church-going African American women across the country, from Madeleine Doris Douglas in Los Angeles to Jacqueline Duodu of the Bethel AME Church in Copiague, New York, and Icie Bettis of the Priest Creek Baptist Church in Palmers Crossing, Mississippi.
This book is a sequel to Brenda Rhodes Miller's popular The Church Ladies' Divine Deserts: Heavenly Recipes and Sweet Recollections. Together, they offer the taste and variety one would expect from a church social or bake sale: this-little-piggy-went-to-market bites, old-fashioned cole slaw, fritters, lasagne, deep-sea casseroles, creamy chocolate pies, pound cakes, bread puddings and strawberry shortcake.
Included with the recipes in this volume are personal and occasionally poignant contributions from church women on how to live both decently and well. Their advice on how to treat people, how to behave in public, what to wear for special occasions, and how to be responsible to one another are valuable primers in the graciousness so sadly lacking in much of modern society.
