On the game Pokémon Go, nature is a place with cell phone coverage where "pocket monsters" lurk. Players venture out into nature to capture these creatures in tiny red balls, where they will be tamed and trained to fight like gladiators in a coliseum.
“Pokémon Go is one of innumerable ways that culture colors our perceptions of what and where nature is - ways that are peculiar and largely unquestioned. Through words, pictures, and social cues, culture imprints our beliefs about nature from a very young age,” writes Julia Corbett in the opening pages of her collection of essays about how we sometimes connect with and yet largely ignore the natural world into which we are born and upon which we are wholly dependent.
