Based on a fantasy series of novels and short stories written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher has been adapted into a Netflix web television series by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and a series of role-playing games by video game developer CD PROJEKT RED.
The story line centers on the "witcher," Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter with supernatural powers struggling to find his place in in a world where people often prove more wicked than the beasts he is hired to destroy.
The term “witcher,” historically, is synonymous with a dowser, someone who practices the art of dowsing for water or hidden objects, which is sometimes considered to be a supernatural craft. Witchers are also commonly persons, especially women, who practice magic or sorcery.
In Sapkowski's series, the witcher is a professional monster slayer and Geralt is said in the stories to be one of the greatest witchers.
