While statehood was officially granted to Texas by the United States on December 29, 1845, the Republic of Texas did not formally transfer authority for the new State of Texas until February 19, 1846, when the formal transfer of authority from the Republic of Texas occurred with President Anson Jones presiding at the capitol in Austin.
