Korea’s Lunar New Year holiday, Seollal, is traditionally a day when families worship their ancestors. Some dress in traditional style, wearing a hooded jacket known as a “hanbok,” and kneel on the ground and bow to elders in an act called “sebae.”
Another Seollal ritual known as “charye” involves preparing meals for those who have died. The living then eat the same meal in a ritual called “eumbok,” thereby receiving a blessing from the dead for the year to come. One of the most popular dishes is rice cake soup.
