One of the most important festivals in Ancient Rome, Saturnalia marked the end of the autumn harvest season in honor the god of seed-sowing, Saturn. Noted for its excesses of food and drink, much like a modern-day Carnival, it began as a one-day farmers festival and devolved over centuries into a huge drunken orgy that lasted for the seven days framing the winter solstice.
