Republic Day is the national day of Hungary, commemorating the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and the official proclamation of the Third Republic in 1989. It is celebrated annually on October 23 with speeches and exhibitions.

The 1956 uprising against the Soviet Union which sought to expel Soviet troops from Hungary and establish free elections was crushed with overwhelming military force in 17 days, but it ultimately led to the creation of the Republic of Hungary in 1989.
