Known in Norway as Nasjonaldagen (National Day) or Grunnlovsdagen (Constitution Day), May 17 is an official public holiday commemorating the signing of the Constitution of Norway in 1814, which declared Norway an independent kingdom.
The holiday is usually observed with cannons firing at dawn, parades, singing and much flag waving. The greeting of “Gratulerer med dagen” (congratulations on the day) is often heard.
