Celebrated on the fourth Friday of September in the US states of California and Nevada, this holiday honors the cultural contributions of Native American communities. In South Dakota, a holiday of the same title occurs on the second Monday of October instead of Columbus Day, which is no longer observed.
In Wisconsin, Columbus Day has been replaced with an Indigenous People's Day celebrated on the second Monday of October to "recognize and appreciate our tribal nations and indigenous people and their resilience, wisdom and the contributions they make to our state". There are eleven federally recognized tribes in Wisconsin.
Since 1994, Tennessee has observed a similar American Indian Day on the fourth Monday in September.
