Sweden's National Day on 6 June commemorates election of Gustav Vasa as King of Sweden in 1523, and adoption of the constitutions of 1809 and 1974. Prior to 1983, the day was celebrated as Swedish Flag Day. 

This holiday often begins with the raising of the Swedish flag on public buildings.The Swedish royal family usually participates in official ceremonies and events, such as attending church services or appearing on the royal palace balcony to greet the public.
