This Hindu festival celebrates the sun's journey from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere, or from Sagittarius to Capricorn in the zodiac. Makar translates as 'Capricorn' and Sankranti means 'transition' in English. Usually occurring in mid-January, the festival is observed by bathing in holy rivers and lakes, gifting, and harvest feasts that often include a dish made of green gram, rice and jaggery. Considered an auspicious time.
