In many communities and states across the United States, Columbus Day has been replaced with an Indigenous People's Day celebrated on the second Monday of October to recognize and appreciate America’s tribal nations and indigenous people and their resilience, wisdom and contributions. The U.S. government officially recognizes close to 600 indigenous tribes in the contiguous 48 states and Alaska.
