Traditionally held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race is the world's oldest currently operating automobile race.
Better known as the Indianapolis 500 or simply the Indy 500, the race features 33 drivers competing for 200 laps, or 500 miles, around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway racing circuit located in Speedway, Indiana.
The first race was held May 30, 1911 and was won by Ray Harroun. The annual event billed as "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" was cancelled twice, from 1917 to 1918 due to World War I and from 1942 to 1945 due to World War II.
