June 30 marks the day in 1960 that the Republic of Congo, as it was known at the time, formally broke away from Belgian colonial rule and declared its independence. Observed as a national holiday, celebrations are not widespread in a nation challenged with famine, disease, civil unrest, and human rights violations, including child labor and violence against women. Since its independence, DR Congo has been ruled by consecutive undemocratic governments.
