The national day of Greenland has been observed on 21 June each year since 1983. Known locally as Ullortuneq, meaning the longest day, the day coincides with the summer solstice. The day is celebrated as an expression of cultural pride and national identity.
This public holiday is celebrated by singing songs, tuning in to national speeches, hoisting the flag, attending church services, indulging in local entertainment which includes music and folk dances, participating in football games and kayaking competitions, and hosting Greenlandic food parties.
Greenland's flag, adopted in 1985, features a red semicircle epitomizing the midnight sun against a white surface representing ice.
