Currently part of the Japanese Golden Week vacation period, Greenery Day is a national holiday in Japan.
Originally observed on April 29 in observance of Emperor Shōwa's birthday, it was changed to May 4 during a 2005 revision of national holidays in Japan. Emperor Shōwa had a special fondness for plant life and "Greenery Day" acknowledges this as a day to commune with nature and appreciate its blessings.
