Celebrated by Presidential Proclamation in the United States each year on October 11 since 1928, this holiday recognizes a Polish hero of the American Revolutionary War. A cavalry officer sometimes referred to as Pulaski is known as "the father of the American cavalry,” Pulaski died on October 11 in 1779 from wounds suffered at the siege of Savannah. A separate local holiday known as Casimir Pulaski Day is observed the first Monday of March in U.S. cities with large Polish populations, such as Chicago.
