History of U.S. Father’s Day
The first observance of a Father's Day in the U.S. may have been held in a church located in Fairmont, West Virginia, on July 5, 1908. A service honoring fathers was conducted by Dr. Robert Webb of West Virginia at the Central United Methodist Church of Fairmont.
The concept of a national Father's Day holiday in the U.S. is generally credited to Sonora Smart Dodd, the daughter of a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own. She was inspired by a a Mother's Day sermon at the Episcopal church she attended and arranged a special tribute for her father in June 19, 1910. Then she began campaigning for an official Father's Day observance to honor all fathers.
In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father's Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956.
A bill establishing a national Father's Day was introduced in Congress as early as 1913 and the idea was supported by President Calvin Coolidge in 1924, but it was not until 1972 that President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.
