Emancipation Day in U.S. Virgin Islands

  • U.S. Virgin Islands (map)

This public holiday in the U.S, Virgin Islands commemorates the emancipation of slaves in the Dutch West Indies in 1848. Celebrations begin with a 15-mile Fort to Fort Walk to Freedom from Fort Christiansvaern in Christiansted to Fort Frederik in Frederiksted.

After Haiti, the three islands of the Dutch West Indies were next to demand freedom from slavery, setting a precedent for emancipation throughout the Caribbean.
