On 27 June each year, the East African nation of Djibouti celebrates independence from France in 1977. Events on this day include a military parade, speeches, singing and dancing.
Djibouti is a successor of French Somaliland, later referred to as the French territory of the Afars and Issas before an independence referendum in May 1977 led to the creation of Republic of Djibouti.
The light blue color in the Djibouti flag represents its Issa population and the green symbolizes the Afars. A white triangle stands for peace and equality, and the red star for independence and unity.
