Established in Mexico in 1937, this national holiday has since been celebrated every year on February 24. It was initiated by the President of Mexico, General Lázaro Cárdenas, in front of the monument to General Vicente Guerrero, who was the first to pledge allegiance to the Mexican flag on March 12, 1821.
Known as the "Flag of the Three Guarantees," Mexico's emblem consists of three vertical bars green, white and red. Green symbolizes hope, white represents purity, and the red symbolizes the blood spilled by the country's heroes.
The center of the flag, contains a shield based on a hieroglyphic used by the Aztecs to represent the foundation of Techochtitlan.
