On January 9 in 1788 delegates at the Connecticut state convention ratified the United States Constitution by a vote of 128 to 40, making Connecticut the fifth state to join the union. The state's official nickname is "The Constitution State" based on the claim that the "Fundamental Orders of 1638/1639" drafted by early settlers in the state were the first written constitution in history.
Connecticut’s state bird is the American Robin; its state flower is the Mountain Laurel.
