Despite being discredited as the first European explorer to reach the New World, Christopher Columbus’ accomplishment is still celebrated as a federal holiday (the second Monday in October) in the United States and a national holiday in many other nations. Observed on or near the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492, the day is a paid holiday for some workers and a day off school for some schoolchildren.
