Also spelled Beltain or Beltine, Irish Beltaine or Belltaine, and known as the Gaelic May Day or Cétamain, this feast day on the first day of May traditionally celebrated the beginning of summer and open pasturing in Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man. Beltane is sometimes observed with bonfires, decorating homes with May flowers, making May bushes, visiting holy wells, and feasting.
