8th of August

Observed primarily in parts of Kentucky and Tennessee, 8th of August is a holiday much like Juneteenth celebrating the emancipation of slaves in the United States. Anecdotally the day Vice President Andrew Johnson freed his slaves in 1863, the 8th of August has been celebrated as an Emancipation Day in the region since at least 1871.

One of the largest 8th of August celebrations occurs annually in Paduca, Kentucky with parades and homecoming events.
