Bloody Mary Day

Bloody Mary Day is celebrated annually in the USA on January 1. Coinciding with New Year's Day, this day seems appropriate for those recovering from New Year's Eve festivities to enjoy an iconic cocktail touted as a hangover remedy.

The name "Bloody Mary" is often assumed to refer to Queen Mary I of England, known for her persecution of Protestants and nicknamed "Bloody Mary" during her reign. But the drink may have been named after a dancer or a waitress named Mary.

While Bloody Mary Day was officially recognized in 2016, the drink has a rich history that dates back to the 1920s, when bartender Fernand Petiot created it at Harry's New York Bar in Paris. Initially named "Bucket of Blood," the cocktail evolved into the well-known Bloody Mary.

Made from vodka, tomato juice, and various spices, Bloody Marys can be found on special brunch menus at many restaurants with creative garnishes and customizations like olives, bacon, celery, and hot sauces.
